Sungrow Power Korea: ESS evolving beyond batteries
Sungrow Power Korea's Head of Technology, Seo Ham, will present on the evolving role of Energy Storage Systems (ESS) beyond batteries at the '2026 Asia Battery Raw Materials Cooperation Forum'.
Our take
Can battery storage in Korea earn from grid-stability services, not just energy shifting?
Grid-stability services are not yet a proven extra income for battery storage in Korea, and the nearest new source, KEPCO tenders for relieving local distribution overloads, is still a draft rule.
KEPCO's draft caps the tender price at half the financial benefit of deferring distribution reinforcement, so payment would follow the cost saved on a given line rather than a market price. What decides is when the rule is finalised, as the draft gives no start date.
For investors — Merchant storage investors and optimisers should treat grid-stability capability as an equipment specification, not a revenue line, until a settlement rule pays for it.
VPP operators and aggregators should follow KEPCO's draft local flexibility rule, since tenders priced against avoided reinforcement would make the choice of distribution line part of the return.
