Youngin Energy Solution, Hitachi Energy Korea to build domestic offshore wind GIS supply chain
Youngin Energy Solution and Hitachi Energy Korea have signed an MOU to cooperate in the field of 66kV Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) for offshore wind turbines.
Our take
Will local support for 66 kV turbine switchgear ease a supply bottleneck for offshore wind in Korea?
Local engineering and service support for 66 kV turbine switchgear may shorten response times on Korean offshore wind projects, but the agreement names no volumes, prices or projects, so schedules and costs are not yet affected.
The product still comes from the global supplier, and the local scope covers engineering, testing, certification and spares rather than production. Its value depends on whether turbine makers supplying Korean projects specify the product.
For investors — Offshore wind developers should ask in procurement whether local engineering and spares cover the chosen turbine model and what response times are contracted, since an MOU is not a service commitment.
Lenders should not credit this in construction or O&M risk until it appears in supply contracts for a named project.
